Maharashtra Plans Strict Rules to Stop Sale of Fake Seeds and Protect Farmers

The Maharashtra government has decided to prepare a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to stop the sale and spread of fake and spurious seeds in the state. This step has been taken after repeated complaints from farmers and lawmakers about poor-quality seeds damaging crops and reducing farm income.

To address the problem, the state government has formed a high-level committee that will draft the SOP. The new rules will clearly define the responsibility of seed companies, dealers and distributors. It will also outline strict action against those involved in making or selling fake seeds. The committee is expected to complete the SOP within one month, after which following these rules will be compulsory for all seed companies operating in Maharashtra.

The SOP is part of a larger crackdown on fake agricultural inputs, including substandard fertilisers and pesticides. Farmers have long suffered heavy losses due to such inferior products, which often lead to poor crop yields and financial stress.

At the national level, the Central government is also working on stronger laws to deal with fake seeds and agricultural chemicals. These proposed laws may include heavier fines and even jail terms for those found guilty.

Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat has also advised agricultural universities to focus on developing and promoting traditional and indigenous seed varieties. He has encouraged research into natural farming practices that can offer climate-resilient and long-term solutions for farmers.

Farmers across the state have welcomed the government’s move. They believe that stricter monitoring and enforcement will reduce losses caused by fake seeds, improve crop productivity, and ensure that only quality seeds reach genuine farmers.
