Prisoners at work. Thai fruit exporter combats labour shortage

To address labour shortages in the agricultural sector, a fresh fruit exporting firm in the central province of Chantaburi employed 30 inmates as factory workers. Thitinai Patikabut, the director of the Tung Benja Correctional Institution in Chantaburi, sent 30 well-behaved inmates to work at the Orasa Fruit Business in the province’s Combang sub-district.

Thitinai claimed that the work opportunity was made possible by a memorandum of understanding signed last month between the jail and the corporation. Only first-time convicts with less than three years and six months remaining on their sentences, according to Thitinai, were entitled to labour outside the jail.
