July 1, 2021

Vivek Sunder, the chief operating officer of food delivery app Swiggy is leaving. Swiggy’s chief executive Sriharsha Majety will take over from Sunder, in October. Majety will be directly overseeing the marketplace business with immediate effect

Sunder joined the company three years ago after spending two decades at fast-moving consumer goods major Procter & Gamble as its managing director. He had been responsible for scaling Swiggy’s key businesses, including food delivery, and its foray into grocery. He played a pivotal role in expanding the geographical footprint of the marketplace business taking Swiggy beyond 500+ cities, and later rallied the organization to drive a step-change in the unit economics of the marketplace business

Sunder played a key role in the company’s on-ground operations during the Covid-19 lockdown phases,

Last year, Swiggy’s cofounder and chief technology officer Rahul Jaimini exited to join Pesto Tech, a career accelerator startup. Sunder was involved in launching Swiggy’s hyperlocal grocery business Instamart. This was a key factor why SoftBank Vision Fund II decided to invest $450 million in the company, which ET reported in April. Rival Zomato, which is set to make its debut on the Indian bourses soon recently signed a deal to invest in e-grocer Grofers.
