The Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH) in Lucknow has created healthier mango varieties with bioactive compounds that have numerous medicinal benefits, including anti-cancer properties.

CISH director Shailendra Rajan stated, “Indeed, it is a significant breakthrough for us.” Mango is the most popular fruit and among the many hybrid varieties of mango, the researchers discovered that CISH-developed ‘Arunika’ was high in bioactive compounds such as mangiferin and lupeol content.”

He went on to say, “The red-blushed Arunika has excellent medicinal properties.” The bioactive compounds in this variety lower blood glucose levels by preventing glucose absorption in the intestine, while Mangiferin protects against breast and colon cancer.”

Another medicinal mango variety developed by CISH is “Saheb Pasand,” which he described as the sweetest variety of mango with a high lupeol content, and which is known for a wide range of pharmacological activities against a variety of disease conditions such as inflammation, arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, renal disease, hepatic toxicity, microbial infections, and cancer.

He stated that the institute was ready with the variety, but that the pulp test was still ongoing in order to compare these hybrid mangoes with other available mango types in terms of medicinal value.

Rajan stated that in the near future, the production of these specific varieties of mango would result in higher income for farmers as well as health benefits for consumers.
