Zomato back in action: Deliveries as good as pre-Covid times

Sep 25, 2020

There is an encouraging news from Bengaluru where Zomato has expressed that the food delivery industry is recovering and taking a fast track with the sector recording gross merchandise levels that are 85% of pre-Covid, up from 75% in August.

The recovery of the food delivery business is being led by the metros cities like Delhi and Mumbai at 95% of pre-Covid level, and Bengaluru and Chennai at 80%. Other metro cities, including Kolkata, Patna, Jamshedpur, Ranchi and Siliguri, have recovered completely and are even exceeding the pre-Covid level. This acceleration indicates consumers are getting over their wariness of ordering food, while they still remain cautious about dining out-of-home.

Still in the metros, the well-off areas are ordering more than the suburbs. “With more premium restaurants — that is, restaurants where a meal for two may cost Rs 1,500 and above — now opening up to online delivery, a larger number of affluent consumers are embracing online ordering. Overall spends on such premium restaurants have grown by over 25% over pre-Covid levels,” Zomato spokesperson said.
