In a landmark move to combat global hunger, the Government of India and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI), marking a new chapter in international food security cooperation.
Under this initiative, India’s Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD) will facilitate the supply of fortified rice to WFP. This rice will be distributed to vulnerable populations in crisis-affected regions worldwide, ensuring both food and essential nutrition reach those most in need.
A Humanitarian Partnership of Global Significance
The collaboration highlights the strength of global partnerships in addressing pressing challenges like hunger and malnutrition. By sourcing food grains from India, an agricultural surplus nation, WFP will be better equipped to deliver life-saving assistance and make measurable progress towards eradicating hunger.
Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary, DFPD, reaffirmed India’s philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – “the world is one family” – saying:
“India is committed to the principle of collective responsibility towards each other and our shared future. The country’s humanitarian support for communities in need, facing food insecurity, is part of this approach.”
Global Recognition of India’s Commitment
Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director of WFP, expressed gratitude for India’s role, noting:
“We deeply appreciate India’s steadfast commitment to fostering a food-secure and peaceful world. This partnership reflects our joint intent to strengthen global efforts and ensure sustained support for those in need.”
He further underlined the importance of India’s contribution at a time when the world is grappling with rising food insecurity and limited humanitarian funding.
Building on Earlier Discussions
This milestone follows the dialogue held in February 2025 during a WFP Executive Board side event in Rome, where representatives from India and WFP explored collaborative avenues. The LoI now sets the stage for a dependable supply of fortified grains for humanitarian distribution, paving the way for future expansion of cooperation.
A Step Towards Ending Hunger
The India-WFP collaboration is more than a food supply arrangement; it is a reflection of India’s role as a responsible global partner and humanitarian leader. By contributing fortified rice, India is not only addressing hunger but also ensuring nutritional security for millions of people worldwide.
