Madurai Celebrates World Food Day with a Healthy Food Festival Promoting Nutrition Awareness

In celebration of World Food Day, a Healthy Food Festival was organized in Madurai on Thursday, 16th Oct’25, with a strong focus on promoting nutrition and healthy eating habits among families, particularly pregnant women and young children. The initiative, spearheaded by the district administration, aimed to raise awareness about the importance of balanced diets and the role of traditional and locally available ingredients in maintaining good health.

The event was inaugurated by District Collector K. J. Praveen Kumar at the Madurai District Collectorate. In his address, the Collector emphasized the significance of adopting nutritious food practices at the household level and encouraged communities to include millets and other nutrient-rich local produce in their daily meals.

The festival witnessed the participation of around 150 employees from various departments and organizations. It was held simultaneously across 17 development blocks and 2,001 Anganwadi centers in the district, ensuring that the message of nutrition reached a wide section of the community.

One of the key highlights of the festival was the culinary exhibition put together by 120 Anganwadi workers, who were divided into 40 teams. They prepared and presented over 100 varieties of healthy dishes, showcasing both traditional and modern recipes made from locally sourced and nutrient-dense ingredients.

Among the dishes displayed were cakes, biscuits, and snacks made using millets, ragi (finger millet), and other small grains, reflecting the renewed push toward India’s millet revolution. The cooks also presented innovative preparations using banana stems, moringa (drumstick) leaves, and multi-grain nutritional flour, demonstrating how traditional ingredients can be incorporated into delicious and healthful meals.

The festival grounds were adorned with posters, paintings, and charts designed by Anganwadi workers and local schoolchildren. These creative displays highlighted the importance of nutrition during pregnancy, the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding, and the need for balanced meals in early childhood.

Officials from the Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, health department representatives, and Anganwadi supervisors were also present at the event. They commended the Anganwadi workers for their dedication to spreading nutritional awareness and for their innovative approach to making healthy food appealing and accessible.

The event concluded with a food tasting session, where visitors and officials sampled the dishes and interacted with the Anganwadi workers to learn about their preparation methods and nutritional value. The festival not only celebrated the spirit of World Food Day but also reinforced the message that good health begins with the right food choices made at home.

Through initiatives like this, the Madurai district administration continues to work toward building healthier communities and empowering women to play a pivotal role in improving family nutrition and public health outcomes.
