IIT Tirupati Appoints Agri-Innovator S Rajendra Nath Reddy to Lead Food Processing Lab

From the farming fields of Routhu Suramala village in Tirupati district to the forefront of global agricultural innovation, S Rajendra Nath Reddy has emerged as a transformative figure in sustainable farming. With over 25 years of experience as an agri-entrepreneur, organic farmer, and consultant, Reddy has successfully merged traditional wisdom with modern technologies to empower smallholder farmers across South Asia.

Recognizing his expertise, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Tirupati has appointed Reddy to head its Common Incubation Center (CIC), which focuses on food processing of local produce such as tomatoes, mangoes, and citrus fruits. At the CIC, he integrates cutting-edge tools — including cold plasma, GIS, GPS, and remote sensing — to enhance efficiency, reduce waste, and promote value addition in regional agri-processing.

Reddy’s impact extends well beyond national boundaries through collaborations with UC Davis and Purdue University. His introduction of Dry Cards and PICS Bags in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka has revolutionized grain storage practices. Dry Cards, developed by UC Davis, allow farmers to check moisture levels in grains, preventing mold and spoilage, while Purdue’s PICS Bags offer triple-layer hermetic storage that eliminates insects without chemicals.

These low-cost solutions have significantly reduced post-harvest losses — which often reach 20% in India — helping farmers achieve up to 90% reduction in insect damage and improved market timing. In Bangladesh, rice and lentil farmers reported a 15–25% increase in household income, while Sri Lankan growers benefitted from lower pesticide costs and enhanced organic export opportunities.

“Such innovations turn potential losses into sustainable profits,” Reddy remarked at a recent conference in Guntur, where he emphasized organic farming as a key to better farmer revenues and climate resilience.

Armed with academic and technical expertise in plant tissue culture, agri-business management, and international agricultural systems, Reddy has been instrumental in adapting global innovations to local needs. He actively promotes the FAO’s Global Soil Doctor Program, serves as a national resource person for organic farming under NRLM, and advises the Vegetable Grower Association of India.

Reddy also holds advisory roles with IIM Udaipur, IIM Lucknow, and Monash University, contributing to research on sustainable agri-supply chains. Through his venture Renuka Bio Farms LLP, he cultivates organic crops and indigenous livestock while promoting agritourism and traceable supply partnerships with companies like ITC, Deepak Fertilizers, and Mother Dairy. As Director of SS Deepam Biotek Pvt Ltd, he advances microbial soil solutions and urban gardening initiatives.

Fluent in multiple languages and deeply engaged with NGOs, government bodies, and startups, Reddy has trained hundreds of farmers and agri-professionals. His work continues to bridge grassroots wisdom with global science — a blend that is shaping the future of climate-resilient, profitable agriculture in India and beyond.
