From App to AI: Swiggy Enables Food and Grocery Orders Through ChatGPT and Other AI Assistants

Swiggy has rolled out a new feature that allows users in India to order food and groceries and book restaurant tables directly through conversational AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and Google Gemini, the company said on Wednesday. The move eliminates the need to navigate the Swiggy app, positioning AI chat interfaces as an alternative front end for on-demand commerce.

The integration enables users to access Swiggy Food, Instamart and Dineout through simple natural-language prompts. Consumers can search for restaurants or grocery items, compare options, apply available offers, place orders and track deliveries end to end—all within the AI chat interface.

The feature is powered by the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard that connects AI agents with live services. With Instamart included, Swiggy becomes one of the first quick-commerce platforms globally to adopt MCP at scale, providing AI-based access to more than 40,000 products across categories.

Swiggy said the initiative is aimed at reducing friction in everyday ordering while enhancing personalisation. By allowing users to interact conversationally, the company expects the experience to feel more intuitive than traditional app-based navigation, especially for repeat or routine purchases.

The rollout reflects a broader shift towards conversational commerce, where AI assistants move beyond discovery to transaction and fulfilment. Swiggy expects such integrations to play an increasingly important role as consumers rely more on AI tools for daily decisions, shopping and service execution.

For the food delivery and quick-commerce major, the move also signals an early bet on AI-driven interfaces as a potential growth channel, complementing its core app while expanding how consumers access its services.
