A Kerala-based start-up has introduced an innovative solution to tackle food wastage with the launch of Plenti, an app that enables consumers to purchase surplus or unsold food from restaurants, bakeries, and supermarkets at significantly reduced prices.
The idea behind Plenti stems from the personal experience of co-founder Mathews Martin during his time at the Indian Institute of Management Nagpur, where large quantities of edible surplus food were routinely discarded despite nearby demand from patients and attendants at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Nagpur. The inability to redistribute that food highlighted a critical gap, eventually leading to the creation of the platform.
Launched in Thiruvananthapuram in October 2025 and later expanded to Kochi in March 2026, the app connects users with food outlets offering surplus items at nearly one-third of their original price. The food listed is safe for consumption, but remains unsold due to timing or demand fluctuations.
By bridging the gap between excess supply and consumer demand, Plenti aims to address both environmental and economic concerns. The platform not only helps reduce food waste but also makes quality food more affordable, contributing to sustainability and responsible consumption.
The initiative reflects a growing trend of tech-driven solutions in the food sector, where startups are leveraging digital platforms to solve real-world problems while promoting efficiency and social impact.
