FSSAI Makes Vegan Logo Mandatory on Approved Food Products from July 2027

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Vegan Foods) Amendment Regulations, 2026, making it mandatory for all approved vegan food products to display a designated “Vegan” logo on their packaging from July 1, 2027.

The amendment, published in the Gazette of India on May 25, 2026, is aimed at standardizing the identification of vegan products and enhancing consumer confidence in the rapidly growing plant-based food segment.

Under the revised regulations, every package of approved vegan food will be required to carry a green “VEGAN” logo featuring a leaf symbol. FSSAI has also issued detailed specifications covering the logo’s design, colour, size and placement to ensure uniform implementation across the industry.

The move follows a draft notification released in December 2022, through which the food regulator sought comments and suggestions from stakeholders over a 60-day consultation period. After reviewing industry feedback, FSSAI finalized the amendments to the Vegan Foods Regulations, 2022.

The notification was signed by Rajit Punhani, Chief Executive Officer of FSSAI.

The mandatory logo is expected to provide consumers with a clear and reliable visual identifier for vegan products while helping manufacturers comply with standardised labelling requirements. Industry observers believe the move will support the expansion of India’s vegan and plant-based food market by improving transparency and reducing confusion over product claims.

Separately, FSSAI recently issued an advisory clarifying the permitted use of Ashwagandha in health supplements, nutraceuticals and special dietary foods. The regulator reiterated that only the roots and root extracts of Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera) are allowed under existing regulations, subject to prescribed limits.

FSSAI further clarified that the use of Ashwagandha leaves, whether in crude form, extracts or any other form, is not permitted in such products. The advisory was issued after the regulator noted that some manufacturers were using Ashwagandha leaves and their extracts in food and nutraceutical formulations contrary to regulatory provisions.
