Energy Drinks Under Watch: Maharashtra Restricts Sales Around School Campuses

The Maharashtra government has decided to ban the sale of energy drinks and similar products within a 500-metre radius of school campuses, in a move aimed at protecting students from potential health risks.

The announcement was made in the state Assembly by Food and Drug Administration Minister Narhari Zirwal, while responding to concerns over the easy availability of energy drinks around schools.

The minister said that if products such as Sting energy drink or any other similar substances are found being sold near school premises, strict action will be taken against those responsible.

The state Food and Drug Administration has been directed to begin enforcement measures. Schools will also be encouraged to conduct awareness programmes to educate students about the possible health impact of energy drink consumption.

The move comes shortly after the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India issued notices to six companies marketing energy drinks over allegedly misleading branding and promotional claims.

The products under scrutiny include Sting, Red Bull Energy Drink, Adrenaline Rush Energy Drink, Campa Energy Drink Gold Boost, Hell Energy and Monster Energy.

According to the regulator, claims such as improving focus, boosting energy levels or helping with weakness are not permitted for food products under India’s food safety laws.

The Maharashtra government said it will focus on both strict enforcement and student awareness to reduce the consumption of such products among children.
