The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has ordered the immediate recall of two food products manufactured by Nilgiri Oil and Allied Industries and Aquagri Processing after laboratory tests found them unsafe and non-compliant with prescribed food safety standards.
The regulator said it issued recall orders against the two food business operators under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, following laboratory testing and evaluation.
Nilgiri Oil and Allied Industries has been directed to recall Shalimar’s Chef – Coriander Powder after a regulatory sample was found to contain pesticide residues above prescribed standards. The sample was declared unsafe, and subsequent retesting also found it unsatisfactory for pesticide residues.
FSSAI has also ordered Aquagri Processing to immediately recall its Carrageenan product following concerns over cadmium levels. A regulatory sample collected by FSSAI’s Southern Region was found to be non-compliant with prescribed specifications for cadmium and was declared unsafe by the food analyst. The finding was confirmed during retesting.
According to FSSAI, the carrageenan product’s manufacture was found to be in violation of applicable provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and related rules and regulations. The latest recalls come as the food regulator has stepped up enforcement against food businesses and e-commerce companies in recent months. FSSAI has also taken action against manufacturers of energy drinks and alcoholic beverages, while several five-star hotels have received regulatory notices.
