In the arid villages of Gangapur, Rajasthan, a new lifeline has emerged amidst the harsh realities of water scarcity and dwindling agricultural yields. As families prepare to migrate in search of livelihood opportunities, a burgeoning ice-cream industry has taken root, offering hope and economic sustenance to the drought-stricken community.
Between November and February, the sleepy town of Gangapur undergoes a transformation. Car workshops bustling with activity, streets lined with cylindrical stainless-steel containers, and traders stocking up on syrups mark the onset of the ice-cream season. Villagers gear up for migration, converting thousands of vehicles into vibrant ice-cream vans, adorned with flavours ranging from traditional condensed milk infused with cardamom to indulgent chocolate, vanilla, and pistachio.
For decades, water scarcity has plagued the region, decimating crop yields and livelihoods. However, the advent of the ice-cream business has breathed new life into the community. Not only has it provided a source of income for migrating farmers turned dessert entrepreneurs, but it has also catalysed a thriving local industry, generating much-needed employment opportunities.
The transformation is palpable, with the number of vehicle repair shops and ice-cream accessory stores soaring from 50 to approximately 500 in recent years. Each season witnesses the conversion of an estimated 50,000 trucks, fuelling a vibrant trade that extends far beyond the confines of Gangapur.
Despite the challenges posed by climate change and agricultural distress, the ice-cream business has emerged as a beacon of resilience for Rajasthan’s farming communities. Through innovation and enterprise, villagers have harnessed the transformative power of ice-cream, not only securing their own livelihoods but also igniting economic prosperity in the parched desert landscape.
As the ice-cream vans embark on their seasonal journey across the country, they carry with them the hopes and aspirations of a community determined to thrive against all odds.
