India has exported 1.755 tonnes of organic palmyra jaggery powder from Erode district in Tamil Nadu to Varna, Bulgaria, marking a step towards expanding the international market for traditional Indian sweeteners.
The consignment was shipped on October 15, the Union Commerce Ministry said on Friday.
Palmyra jaggery powder is produced from the nectar of palmyra palm blossoms. It is a traditional sweetener that could gain wider acceptance in overseas markets as demand grows for alternatives to refined sugar.
The product also offers opportunities for value addition in India’s agricultural and food-processing sectors, potentially creating new markets for traditional sweeteners.
The Commerce Ministry highlighted the powder’s potential as an alternative to refined sugar, noting that it contains vitamins and minerals.
The export reflects efforts to bring region-specific Indian food products to international markets and strengthen opportunities for producers through value-added agricultural exports.
