India Ships First Commercial Sea Consignment of Banganapalle Mangoes to Singapore

India has achieved a significant milestone in horticultural exports with the successful commercial shipment of premium Banganapalle mangoes to Singapore through sea freight, marking a major step toward promoting cost-effective and sustainable export channels for fresh produce.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, facilitated the initiative in collaboration with the ICAR-Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), Lucknow.

The export consignment consisted of 5 metric tonnes (MT) of Banganapalle mangoes shipped by M/s Osum Food Solutions LLP. The cargo was dispatched on June 11, 2026, and reached Singapore on June 24, 2026.

According to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the initiative is aimed at expanding market access for premium Indian mangoes while encouraging the use of sea freight as a commercially viable export option.

The mangoes were sourced from Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)-certified orchards in Andhra Pradesh and processed and packed at an APEDA-recognised facility in Karnataka. The consignment was prepared in line with Singapore’s quality and phytosanitary standards.

Singapore-based importer EC-Links Pte Ltd reportedly expressed satisfaction with the quality of the shipment, highlighting the fruit’s sweetness, uniform ripening, shelf life and overall quality condition after arrival.

Officials said the successful export demonstrated the effectiveness of scientific post-harvest practices and cold-chain logistics in maintaining fruit quality during sea transportation.

The shipment also generated stronger earnings for growers. While Banganapalle mangoes were fetching around Rs 25–26 per kilogram in domestic markets, the export consignment realised nearly Rs 50 per kilogram, resulting in almost double the farm-gate returns for farmers.

The Ministry noted that the success of the shipment underlines the growing potential of sea freight as an economical and environmentally sustainable mode of transporting fresh fruits at a larger commercial scale.

Banganapalle, one of India’s most widely consumed mango varieties, is known for its golden-yellow appearance, rich sweetness, pleasant aroma and fibreless pulp. The variety continues to witness strong demand in overseas markets, presenting substantial opportunities for export expansion.

APEDA has been actively promoting sea-based exports of fresh fruits and vegetables through market development initiatives, infrastructure support and capacity-building efforts to improve India’s competitiveness in global horticultural trade.
