Global frozen food major McCain Foods has entered into an agreement to acquire the frozen potato processing business of Falcon Agrifriz Foods in Gujarat, in a move aimed at expanding its production capacity and strengthening its position in India’s growing frozen food market.
The transaction, which remains subject to customary closing conditions, will complement McCain’s existing manufacturing operations in Mehsana and provide additional capacity to cater to domestic demand and international markets.
Falcon Agrifriz operates a potato processing facility in Gujarat, employs more than 450 people and works with over 1,000 farmers across the state. Following completion of the acquisition, McCain plans to integrate the facility’s employees and farmer relationships into its broader Indian operations.
The company expects the expanded manufacturing network to provide greater operational flexibility as it scales production and strengthens its supply chain.
Expanding India’s frozen food capacity
The acquisition builds on McCain’s long-standing presence in India, where it has operated since 1998. The company currently employs more than 940 people directly and partners with over 2,500 farmers nationwide.
The deal follows McCain’s recent investment of CAD 135 million to expand its existing Gujarat operations. The project generated employment for 110 full-time employees and 150 contract workers.
By adding Falcon Agrifriz’s potato processing business to its existing facilities, McCain is seeking to strengthen its manufacturing base in a key potato-producing state while expanding its ability to serve multiple markets.
Strengthening farmer partnerships
Potato sourcing remains central to the frozen potato products business, making relationships with growers an important part of manufacturing and supply-chain operations.
Falcon Agrifriz’s network of more than 1,000 farmers offers an additional sourcing base for McCain. The planned integration of these relationships into the company’s existing network could help consolidate procurement and processing operations in Gujarat.
For farmers, closer integration with a large-scale processor could create opportunities to participate in organised supply chains, although the actual benefits will depend on the terms and implementation of the arrangements.
Growth opportunities in frozen foods
McCain’s proposed acquisition comes as food manufacturers continue to invest in production capacity and supply-chain infrastructure to support their expansion in India.
The additional facility is expected to give the company greater flexibility in managing production and meeting demand across domestic and export markets. However, the financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
The acquisition underscores McCain’s continued investment in India and its strategy of expanding through manufacturing capacity, farmer partnerships and deeper integration of its regional operations.
