‘Misthi’ shops in West Bengal opens amid COVID-19 lockdown

April 1, 2020

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has decided to ease the rules of the ongoing lockdown for sweets industry from Tuesday.

Sweet shops in West Bengal will remain open between 12 pm to 4 pm to cater to the sweet tooth of consumers

Generally after meals, people always prefer to end a good dine with something sweet may be it a dessert or a sweet dish. Likewise, Bengali meals are incomplete if there is no sweet-dish on the table.

Seeing the situation and holding the knowledge of Bengali sweet tooth, CM Mamata Banerjee has decided to ease the rules of the lockdown for the sweets industry. Hence, from Tuesday (31st March) onwards, all the sweet shops and outlets will remain open between 12 pm to 4 pm to serve the the cravings for having something sweet. Bengal’s favourites may hold a cottage cheese ‘Sandesh’ or juicy ‘Roshogolla’ after every meal.

A question arises here is: Why is the chief minister so much keen on opening the shutter of sweet shops?

With a thorough understanding of the Bengali taste buds for mithai and sweets, Mamata Banerjee is also trying dairy sector by helping dairy farmers and related people involved in the businesses.

The CM received information that cottage cheese (chhena or paneer) was being wasted in lockdown condition and that dairy farmers were disposing milk in gutters and drains.

The farmers opined that due to lockdown, sweet shops and outlets suffered great losses and with that the milk industry and milk products like cottage cheese has suffered too. Hence, Mamata Banerjee’s this constructive move could be an initiative to help these people carry on their trade and business.

However, according to the local and national political pundits, this step will go a long way politically too as this move showcases her love for the people of her state and everything that matters to them on whole.
