The United Arab Emirates (UAE) lifted a ban on the import of eggs and other chicken products from India after New Delhi assured the World Organization for Animal Health that it would follow biosafety criteria established by the World Organization for Animal Health to prevent the spread of bird flu.

According to media sources, Indian egg and poultry dealers would be permitted to export table eggs, hatching eggs, and day-old chicks to the UAE “from two firms in Tamil Nadu.  The chicken shipments from India have been halted for the past five years owing to concerns about bird flu.

As sources said, part of a trade agreement being negotiated with the UAE, India has demanded access to the egg market. Considering the agreement, India intends to increase exports of 1,100 different commodities, including poultry, washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators, spices, tobacco, cotton fabrics, textiles, and leather. Reliable source said that the UAE is eager to obtain duty exemptions from India for dates, confectionery, and sugar-based products.

With nearly $60 billion in bilateral trade in FY20, the UAE is India’s third-largest commercial partner. With a projected export value of $29 billion, it was India’s second-largest export destination behind the United States, cited the report.

As per PTI, sources familiar with the situation, both nations hope to finalise the visit in January, though no dates have been set in stone.

The prime minister’s possible travel to the strategically important Gulf nation comes as the two countries prepare to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. During his visit, he is expected to go to the ongoing Dubai Expo.
