To ensure the purity of honey, SC issues notice on PIL by ACCIT

April 21, 2021

The central government now will have to place a recent report, published by the Centre for Science and Environment which claimed that most of the honey sold in the market including ones by major brands were adulterated by Chinese fructose, before the court and any other reports which suggest that they may not be pure. As the Supreme Court has issued notices on a PIL seeking court intervention to ensure the purity of honey sold in the market. The PIL was filed by Anti-Corruption Council of India Trust (ACCIT).

The PIL quotes this report extensively to claim that the honey being sold in the market was adulterated and to urge the court to direct the government to ensure purity of honey by fixing standards and ensuring that these are adhered to.

There was huge controversy in the wake of the CSE report with major honey brands going overboard with ads claiming that their products were pure. Most claimed their honey had passed necessary tests and had been certified by the authorities concerned about its purity.
