What Makes Kashmir’s Mishri Cherry So Special?

July 9, 2021

As Kashmir sends its first export cargo to this Middle Eastern country, Dubai gets a taste of delicious, fresh, red Mishri Cherries from India.

Kashmir is well-known for its Mishri cherry varietal. This cultivar has a sweeter flavour than the others. Kashmir, which accounts for 95 percent of total cherry output in India, is ecstatic not only about its record crop but also about the government’s attempts to boost cherry exports outside of India.

Every year, Kashmir produces 12,000 to 13,000 metric tons of cherries. The cherry season lasts from May until July.

Specialty of Mishri Cherry

Mishri cherries are incredibly sweet, which is why they are called “Mishri.” Aside from that, they are high in nutrients such as minerals, vitamins, and plant components that are beneficial to overall health. A handful of cherries every day may keep you energized, radiant, and simply joyful!

Other well-known varieties of Cherry from Kashmir

Aside from the Mishri variety, Kashmir also grows Makhmali cherry, Italy cherry, and Double Cherry.

This year (2021), Kashmir valley produced approximately 10-12 cherry types. In the next months, the valley will yield peaches, apricots, apples, almonds, walnuts, and grapes.

How export of Mishri Cherries be beneficial to India?

Mishri Cherries have been grown in Kashmir Valley for decades, but they have recently gained attention due to the fruit being exported for the first time in Dubai. This is a significant boost for India’s horticulture industry, which employs over 1.3 billion people and accounts for 15% of the country’s GDP.

The Jammu and Kashmir Horticulture Department has inked an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with GoAir to transport perishable horticulture produce throughout the country and beyond. Farmers’ revenue will benefit from this. The export of cherries is the “cherry on top” for Kashmiri farmers.
