World Coffee Conference 2023 will elevate Indian Coffee to Global Recognition, Says Coffee Board CEO K G Jagadeesha

The World Coffee Conference-2023, held in Bengaluru, has set the stage for India’s high-quality, sustainable coffee production to gain global recognition, according to K G Jagadeesha, CEO of the Coffee Board of India. Mr. Jagadeesha expressed optimism that the conference’s success would propel Indian coffee into the international spotlight, leading to enhanced consumer perception and increased market prices.

During a press conference, Mr. Jagadeesha highlighted India’s unique approach to coffee cultivation, emphasizing the sustainable practices employed. He noted that Indian coffee is grown under shade, making it one of the most environmentally friendly coffee production methods globally.

“Indian coffees are unparalleled, with our Robusta variety standing out as unbeatable. In terms of Arabica, we are on par with Colombian coffees. However, our coffees have not received the recognition they deserve in the global market,” said Mr. Jagadeesha, underscoring the absence of Indian coffee on European café menus.

Reflecting on the four-day World Coffee Conference that drew participants from over 80 countries and featured 45 sessions with 127 speakers, Mr. Jagadeesha emphasized its potential to elevate Indian coffee’s identity on the world stage.

“This event is definitely going to open doors to highlight India as a country that cultivates coffee sustainably, producing some of the finest coffees globally,” he stated.

Mr. Jagadeesha expects that the conference will lead to a more favorable perception of Indian coffee among consumers, ultimately resulting in better prices. Additionally, he anticipates that the event will contribute to finding long-term solutions to challenges facing the coffee sector.

The conference witnessed 347 business-to-business meetings and numerous informal interactions, fostering stronger business relationships among attendees. Mr. Jagadeesha highlighted the positive impression India left on the world stage, emphasizing its status as a vibrant coffee producer.

The Coffee Board of India has partnered with three universities to document the conference’s proceedings, which will be published in the coming weeks, further disseminating insights and knowledge from the event.
