Tetra Pak has partnered with Sterilgarda Alimenti to introduce what they describe as the industry’s first 1-litre aseptic carton featuring a paper-based barrier, a move aimed at accelerating the shift toward low-carbon and renewable packaging solutions.
The innovation has been incorporated into the widely used Tetra Brik Aseptic 1000 Edge format, known for its distinctive slanted top design. By replacing the conventional aluminum layer with a paper-based alternative and combining it with plant-based polymers, the package achieves up to 90% renewable material content.
According to the companies, the new carton is designed for ambient distribution and delivers performance and shelf life comparable to traditional aseptic packs. At the same time, it significantly lowers environmental impact, with independent verification by Carbon Trust indicating a potential reduction in carbon footprint of up to 50%.
Giampaolo Rossi said the development aligns with the company’s focus on combining innovation with evolving consumer expectations around sustainability. He noted that adopting advanced packaging technologies is becoming increasingly important as demand for environmentally responsible products rises.
Tatiana Liceti highlighted that the new barrier material represents a step forward in making beverage cartons more renewable. She added that the development reflects close collaboration with industry partners to help producers meet sustainability goals while offering consumers more responsible packaging choices.
The launch marks another milestone in the packaging industry’s efforts to reduce reliance on fossil-based materials while maintaining the functional benefits of aseptic technology.
