India’s growing obsession with high-protein diets is rapidly reshaping grocery consumption patterns, with quick commerce platforms witnessing a sharp rise in demand for protein-rich foods and supplements across metros as well as smaller cities. According to data shared by Swiggy Instamart, protein-related orders have surged by 150% over the last two years, reflecting the growing popularity of health-conscious and “better-for-you” eating habits among Indian consumers.
While Bengaluru remains the country’s largest market for protein purchases, the fastest growth is now emerging from Tier II cities such as Nagpur, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, and Visakhapatnam, where protein consumption growth is reportedly over 200% higher than metros.
Traditional staples such as eggs, paneer, chicken, chickpeas, Greek yogurt, makhana, oats, and protein bars continue to dominate the trend. Among categories, protein snacks recorded nearly 300% growth, while protein yogurt rose around 280%. Plant-based options are also gaining traction, with soya chunks and tofu witnessing significant increases in sales.
Search trends showed peanut butter and Greek yogurt among the most searched protein products, while protein bread achieved the highest search-to-checkout conversion rate. Traditional Indian ingredients like makhana, besan, roasted chana, and chana sattu are also being repositioned as high-protein everyday foods.
Instamart noted that protein purchases peak during breakfast hours and post-workout periods, with growing late-night demand among younger consumers. The rising protein craze is also pushing up order values, especially for whey protein, protein bars, and peanut-based products.
The surge in demand comes at a time when global whey and dairy protein supply chains are facing increasing pressure due to rising worldwide consumption.
