FSSAI Digitizes Food Recall System with FoSCoS Upgrade, Enables Real-Time Alerts and Tracking

In a move aimed at strengthening food safety oversight, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has introduced a dedicated ‘Food Recall’ module within its Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) platform, marking a shift toward faster, tech-driven recall management.

The new functionality replaces manual recall processes with a digital, end-to-end tracking system, helping you identify and withdraw unsafe or substandard food products from the market more quickly. The initiative builds on the existing Food Safety and Standards (Food Recall Procedure) Regulations, 2017, which mandate a structured and transparent recall mechanism.

According to the regulator, the upgraded system introduces a standardised workflow for all stakeholders across the supply chain. Designated Officers and Central Licensing Authorities will now initiate and monitor recalls through their official FoSCoS logins. Each case will be assigned a unique recall ID, enabling complete traceability—from product withdrawal to final disposal.

Food Business Operators (FBOs) have also been brought into the digital loop. They are now required to report voluntary recalls through the platform and can track enforcement actions in real time, allowing for faster corrective responses.

A key consumer-facing feature of the upgrade is public access to active recall information. Citizens can now view ongoing recalls directly on the FoSCoS homepage, helping them identify potentially unsafe products in their possession.

Sweety Behera, Director (Regulatory Compliance) at FSSAI, said state food safety commissioners have been directed to ensure immediate adoption of the system across regions, signalling a nationwide push toward digitized food safety enforcement.

The move is expected to enhance transparency, accountability, and response time in India’s food recall ecosystem, aligning regulatory practices with global standards.
