States Lead Crackdown as FSSAI Steps Up Food Safety Enforcement in FY26

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) significantly intensified its food safety enforcement drive in FY 2025–26, with states playing a pivotal role in inspections, testing, and legal action nationwide.

According to official sources, nearly 3,97,009 inspections were conducted at food establishments during the year. In parallel, 1,65,747 food samples were analysed through the third quarter, with 17.16% found non-compliant, prompting swift regulatory interventions.

Legal enforcement also gained traction, with 23,580 adjudication cases resolved and 1,756 criminal convictions secured, reinforcing accountability across the food business ecosystem. Financial penalties totalling ₹154.87 crore were imposed, underscoring a stricter stance against violations.

In a major consumer protection move, authorities initiated 945 food recalls during the year to prevent unsafe products from reaching consumers.

The enforcement push highlights a clear division of responsibilities within India’s food safety framework. While the FSSAI continues to set standards and regulatory guidelines, implementation on the ground remains largely with state authorities. Nearly 98% of Food Business Operators (FBOs) fall under state licensing systems, making states central to enforcement efforts.

As part of expanding regulatory coverage, more than 10 lakh street food vendors were brought under formal oversight, marking a significant step toward improving food safety compliance in the informal sector.

The developments signal a more coordinated and stringent food safety regime, with states emerging as the frontline drivers of enforcement.
